CUTTING UP MY CREDIT CARDS & CLOSING THE ACCOUNTS

Updated: Aug 17, 2023

Okay, guys! I did it!!!! I cut up all of my credit cards!!! I had 15! 15!!!!!! 4 of them still have balances.

By the way, I am a student of Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey, and a huge fan of his. He’s a man of “tell it how it is”. He’s been at the bottom and now he’s at the tippy top, and he’s helping others get there as well. I don’t know I about you, but I will be one of them!

I am sick & tired of living paycheck to paycheck.

Why am I on this debt free journey?

For a little overview – I started with about 35k in debt. (it was debt from my ex fiance and I; all in my name)

What does it take to get out of debt?

Guts

Strength

Willpower

Understanding that people will think you’re weird

Living against the norms of society

No shopping

WORK LIKE A MAD MAN; pick up any & all extra shifts

Selling so many things!!!

Cut down your grocery spending

Write out a budget & STICK TO IT!

Commitment

Courage

& more <3

For awhile I had my credit cards taped away in a drawer… but after a few months I started thinking to myself, why have them at all? I was subconsciously keeping them “just in case”. Just in case WHAT? Pay CASH FOR JUST IN CASE.

Emergencies are NOT the time to use credit cards!!! You will make a bad situation 10X worse!

So I got to thinking…… is this smart?

No.

Do I actually want to use these cards again?

Never.

Some of them have such high interest rates that when you pay the minimum balance, the next month the total balance is MORE. Insanity.

So how did I do it?

I decided it was time to boss-up. I was not going to live like this anymore. I’m done.

I got all of the cards the have a $0 balance and called to cancel the account.

STAND YOUR GROUND. Some of them really want you to stay a “member”.

I got all of the cards that DID have a balance & wrote down the card information as well as the customer service number that’s on the back of the card so that I’ll have it for when they’re ready to be cancelled. (when the balance is $0)

You don’t want to close the accounts of the ones with a balance yet! Wait until they’re paid off.

I chopped away! ALL OF THE CARDS! Even the ones with a balance! You do not want to rack the balance even higher, do you?! NO.

Chop up ALL of them!

*When you call to cancel, try to get either an email, fax, or letter of the conversation stating that you cancelled. They’ll usually offer it at most places.

I am claiming freedom! Freedom from debt, from borrowing, from slavery.

I am claiming wealth! Wealth in my health, finances, career.

I want to GIVE to the world! How can I possibly do that when I can hardly give to myself?

The goal is to be outrageously generous.

I urge you to join me. If you’ve had it with debt & the way we’re treated as consumers, I’ve got your back! We’re in this thing together.

Love & light,

Emily xoxo
